Hardwood flooring: timeless beauty for your Tampa home

Wood floors are more than just a purchase; they are an investment. They last for decades, and, in most cases, all they need is a refinishing (with or without sanding) to bring them back to their original luster. They work with any decor, never go out of style, and add value to your property.

Engineered wood flooring is taking the industry by storm

Many automatically think "solid" when they hear the phrase "wood floors" and engineered appeals to people who want both beauty and practicality. It features a construction that makes it stable and better able to handle water. As we know, solid wood can be damaged by excess moisture and shrinks or expands to adjust to humidity; that is easily handled by wiping spills immediately and completing an uncomplicated process called acclimation.

Engineered is layered and, at the top, is a slice of species, giving it beauty and glamour. Underneath are three or more authentic wood layers, combined with a little resin and placed in a crosswise position. Like solid, it can be sanded and adds value to a property. Unlike solid, it can be placed in some higher-than-normal moisture areas.

Engineered is also less expensive and has a less complicated installation. While solid is tongue and groove and requires extensive subfloor restoration, engineered wood can be a floating floor, even installed on concrete. In floating floors, pieces click together and then hover over the subfloor with no nails and glue.

Hardwood species and style

Both are available in a wide assortment of both domestics (harvested within the US) and exotics (harvested in areas like Brazil, Indonesia, and Africa.) Domestics are warm and more traditional, while exotics are darker and more dramatic. Currently, the most popular species are hickory, oak, maple, cherry, and walnut.

Thickness determines sanding

Whether you decide on solid or engineered floors, consider the thickness. Ideal for solid is ¾-inch, and it can be sanded up to six times. Engineered has a range from ⅝-inch to ½-inch, and thicker is better. Depending on that number, it can be sanded up to five times.
