Laminate could be your perfect flooring choice

Laminate wood flooring looks, feels and even sounds similar to hardwood, but without hardwood’s price tag. It can seem overwhelming, with all the colors, patterns, and designs, but we're here to help you sort it out. Here’s a guide to help you, but don't be afraid to ask many questions. The more you know, the more likely you are to get a good quality product, one that will make your laminate flooring installation the “jewel of the crown” of your home.

Laminate flooring AC rating

Abrasion Criteria (AC) is a numbered rating system from one to five that tells you about durability, and it is considered the most accurate rating system for laminate. It measures laminate's resistance to wear, impact, abrasion, and even cigarette burns. It tells you how much foot traffic the product can withstand. It’s tested several different ways to see how it will react, for instance, with furniture legs or casters. AC-3 and AC-4 are considered the best for residential use; they will handle moderate and heavy foot traffic, respectively.

Examine the layers of your laminate choice

Images are taken with 3D photography and printed digitally. They are vibrant and clear; you should see knots, grains, swirls, and color/veining variations. Does it look machine-made? Do you see repeating patterns? The patterns should have enough variety to look natural.

The material should be high-pressure laminate, a more advanced technology that provides better quality, and it should have its UV protection. The overall thickness should be at least 8-mm or 9-mm, but for a high-quality look and feel, you might go as high as 10-mm or 12-mm. The core should be the HDF (high-density fiberboard) because that is the most stable and water-resistant. It should also be NALFA certified (North American Laminate Flooring Association) because this means it has undergone extensive testing.

Ask our Tampa laminate flooring installation experts

A good quality installation will ensure that your laminate flooring will look and perform well for 25 years or more. The installer will smooth the subfloor, if needed, so that imperfections don’t telegraph to the surface floor. They will use needed expanders and caulking to ensure a tight, properly aligned fit that will enhance water resistance.
