Luxury vinyl flooring: a great alternative to wood, stone, &tile

What do you do when you want a wood floor in an area, like the bathroom, that’s too humid and moist for wood floors? You go with vinyl plank flooring (LVP), which is luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) cut into strips and mounted on boards to simulate hardwood planks. Since it's waterproof, it can go where authentic wood can't, such as the kitchen, bath, or laundry room, but it's so highly designed, people use it also for the living and dining areas, home office, and bedrooms. The other option is LVT flooring, where the material is cut into square, groutable tile-sized pieces.

What is luxury vinyl flooring?

This vinyl is a true-to-life echo of natural materials. Images are taken with 3D photography, so they are clear and accurate. Embossing gives the floor depth and dimension, as well as textured features, which are currently trending. They include wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered and distressed looks and matte, gloss, and high-gloss finishes.

Many use vinyl planks when simulating a stone look. The large format with few seams gives it a more continuous look, like quarried marble or some other stone. Others prefer the tile-sized pieces because they feel the extra seams add to the realism; some take it even further using grout, now in a broad color palette, and considered a design tool.

Is LVF installation complicated?

No, this can be a floating floor. That means the pieces click together, then hover over the subfloor with no nails or glue needed. Subfloors need to be clean, dry, and level, but sometimes they will need a little extra care. The installer might sand to level it out; otherwise, imperfections can telegraph to the surface floor.

LVF is durable and should be at least 8-mm or 9-mm thick, but you might go higher for an authentic look and feel of hardwood. The wear layer should be 20-mils or more. The flooring is soft, warm, flexible, and easy to care for with just a regular sweeping and periodic mopping.
